Marvelous Holiday Accessories à la Mrs. Maisel

If you watched the Marvelous Mrs. Maisel on Amazon Prime last year, chances are you’ve had this week marked on your calendar for awhile. The second season of the incredibly stylish, insouciantly witty, unbearably moving and infinitely binge-worthy series dropped on Wednesday at midnight EST — just about the time our heroine Midge Maisel would be taking the stage in a pin-perfect frock to open up for a lesser male comedian in a smoky Lower East Side comedy club.

The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel is Mad Men for the #metoo era. All of the luscious mid-century NYC style, none of the privileged white male tears — at least none that we’re supposed to take seriously. Season one of this show was 100 percent about a woman doing everything the boys do, but backwards and in heels.

Even if I wasn’t so proud of Mrs. M. I would probably watch the show just for those heels. Also, the hats, the handbags, and the gloves — after all, Midge Maisel is a woman who learned to drive because she fell in love with a pair of pink driving gloves. “Everything with Midge starts with an accessory,” her mother says.

And while she’s discovered the accessory she likes best is a microphone, her glamorous, jewel-toned style seems like the perfect festive fit for the holiday season. Since you can’t get the look at B. Altman (where Midge works and shops) anymore, here are some local and online alternatives

Part of Midge’s charm is that even when things are at their worst, she prefers to look at the world through rose-colored glasses. And since she’s spending some of season two in Paris, all the better to see la vie en rose. Stella Sunglasses in blush, $98 at Draper James .

Like many women of her generation, my girl Midge wore gloves every time she went out (and when she didn’t, she was criticized for it by a couple of record store dweebs). Today, gloves are hardly de rigueur but they are a nice little bonus the accessories gods have given us to put some joy back in winter dressing. Echo Lambskin Leather Touchscreen Gloves with Genuine Fox Fur Trim, $149 at Nordstrom .

Midge may be too much of an Upper West Side princess to ever go full beatnik like some of her comedy club counterparts, but a jaunty red beret is an on-brand nod to her secret life. San Diego Hat Company Women's Wool Beret in red, $30 on Amazon .

“Men, in general, run around telling everyone that only men are funny,” says Midge in season two. “Comedy is fueled by disappointment and humiliation. Now, who the hell does that describe more than women ?” We Killed, The Rise of Women in American Comedy, $18 on Amazon .

Midge’s accessories may be a feast for the eyes, but the classic Jewish deli foods depicted in nearly every episode of TMMM are a feast for the senses. So much so, that Amazon recreated the legendary Carnegie Deli, which closed in 2016, in a popup restaurant to celebrate the premiere of Season 2. The gorgeous pastrami pictured here, though, is from Ansel’s Pastrami and Bagels in Omaha’s Blackstone District, which also makes real NY bagels, using actual NYC-filtered water.
