Kelly Newell, Scout Dry Goods
TB: How does fashion empower women?
KN: Fashion is one of those amazing things that allows us to be whoever we want. Clothes are powerful and send a message to everyone that sees us. Fashion is so fun and is truly accessible to everyone regardless of income. Scout is such a great option for people who love fashion and want to try different trends or items but don't want to break the bank AND we get hundreds of new items in every day, so that's fun!
TB: What do you admire most about your target customer?
KN: I love how passionate and vocal our customers are about issues that they believe in. They are also apologetically themselves which I absolutely love! I'm inspired by our customers and our community, we've made a lot of progress in just the last five years.
TB: What iconic women do you most admire and why?
KN: Hilary Clinton, Leslie Knope & Oprah are three faves, of course, but my mom is right up there with them. I love a strong woman that has a voice and a vision and doesn't take shit from anyone.
TB: Do you think Omaha is a hospitable environment for women business owners?
KN: In some ways, yes, but we have a long way to go. Unfortunately Nebraska was recently scored as being one of the worst places for women business owners. I like Omaha as a female business owner because I can be a 'big fish in a little pond' here. It's easy to meet people and get things done here, especially if you don't mind ruffling some feathers along the way.
TB: What words of wisdom would you share with the next generation of women business owners?
KN: Try things. Get a mentor. Surround yourself with people that you look up to and that you want to be like and that are smarter than you. Reach out to people, ask questions, keep learning. If doors open fairly easily you know you're on the right path. Don't be afraid to try something because you might fail, because, honey, what if you succeed?! Dream big and then keep on dreaming because your life can be whatever you want it to be! Git it gurls!
